# Is Your Senior Cat Drinking More? Hot Weather or an Early Kidney Sign — How to Tell at Home

Is your cat aged 8 or older heading to the water bowl more often this month? If so, don't just blame the heat.

Here in Rangsit, Khlong 5 and Thanyaburi, it's hot and humid nearly all year, so it's normal for a cat to drink a bit more. In older cats, though, drinking more and peeing more can be one of the first signs of kidney disease. It's also something you can spot at home before you ever get a blood test. The idea that 'pets over 7 should have their kidneys and heart checked' has been coming up again among pet owners lately, so here's what you can watch for at home.

## Why kidney decline is often brushed off as 'just getting old'

The kidneys have a lot of spare capacity. By the time signs are obvious, a good share of kidney function may already be gone. Early on, your cat still eats, plays and sleeps much as before. The changes come on slowly: a little more sleeping, a little weight loss. That's why so many owners put it down to age.

## Drinking more because of the heat vs. because of the kidneys

Check these three things:

- **Timing:** Heat-related drinking goes up on very hot days and drops back when it rains or your cat is in an air-conditioned room. Kidney-related drinking stays high for weeks, whatever the weather.

- **The litter box:** Drinking because of the heat usually doesn't make the urine clumps much bigger. When the kidneys can't hold on to water, the clumps get bigger or there are clearly more of them. With kidney disease, the body loses water through the urine first, so the cat drinks to make up for it.

- **The big picture:** If your cat is drinking more but still eating well, keeping its weight and acting bright, the weather is the likely reason. If other signs show up too, have a vet take a look.

**An easy way to measure:** Measure the water into the bowl at the same time each morning. The next morning, measure what's left and subtract (measure every bowl if you have more than one). Do this for 3–5 days. Drinking more than about 100 ml per kg of body weight per day from the bowl is considered too much. Cats on mostly wet food drink much less from the bowl to begin with, so also watch whether the amount keeps going up.

## Other signs that often show up alongside it

- Weight loss even though your cat eats the same amount, and a spine you can feel more easily

- A smaller appetite, pickiness, or more vomiting

- A dull, rough coat and less self-grooming

- Very pale urine

- Unusually strong bad breath

These signs don't always mean kidney disease. Diabetes and an overactive thyroid can also make senior cats drink more. Testing is the only way to find the cause.

## What to note down for your vet

- How much water you measured each day

- The number and size of urine clumps per day (photos of the litter box help a lot)

- Your cat's latest weight compared with the last one

- Dry or wet food, and any recent food changes

- Any medicines or supplements

- When you first noticed the change

These notes help your vet choose the right tests, such as blood work, a urine test and a blood pressure check.

## The bottom line

When the heat is the cause, drinking rises and falls with the weather and nothing else changes. If your cat keeps drinking more, pees more, or loses weight, don't write it off as 'just old age.' Finding kidney decline early means diet and care can be adjusted sooner, which helps your cat stay comfortable for longer. We recommend a yearly check-up for cats aged 7–8 and over.
