## English version
# Is It Just a Cold? When Your Dog's Sniffles Might Be Canine Distemper
Many people believe a dog's cold will clear up on its own, just like ours. In reality, some illnesses look like a simple cold at first but need very different care. One of them is **canine distemper**, a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects puppies and dogs whose vaccinations are incomplete or haven't had their boosters.
Vets in some countries are reporting more distemper cases lately. There's no need to panic. Knowing what to look for is what helps you act in time.
## Why Canine Distemper Looks Like a Common Cold
In the early stage, dogs often have eye discharge, a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, fever, low energy and a poor appetite, which looks almost exactly like an ordinary cold. That's why many owners don't spot it at first, and that's completely understandable.
The key difference is that the distemper virus doesn't stay in the airways. It can spread to the digestive tract, the skin and the nervous system, so it needs much closer care than a normal cold.
## Signs Your Dog Should See a Vet Soon
- Thick, sticky yellow or green eye or nasal discharge
- A cough that lasts several days, or trouble breathing
- Marked tiredness or refusing food
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Thickened, hardened paw pads or nose, or cracked, dry skin (often called hard pad)
- Muscle twitching, wobbly walking or seizures
If your dog is a puppy or isn't fully vaccinated and shows cold-like signs, bring them in soon rather than waiting several days. Things can get serious without prompt care.
## How Distemper Is Diagnosed and Treated
Your vet will ask about vaccination history, do a physical exam, and may run a test kit or lab tests to tell distemper apart from a cold or other respiratory illnesses.
There's currently no medicine that kills the virus directly, so treatment is supportive: fluids, fever control, preventing secondary infections, nutrition support, and managing any neurological signs. The earlier care starts, the better a dog's chances of improving.
In the meantime, keep your dog away from other dogs at home, clean water and food bowls and bedding, and wash your hands after handling them.
## Prevented by Vaccination
The good news is that distemper can be prevented with a core combination vaccine. Puppies usually get their first shot at around 6–8 weeks, followed by a series of doses on the schedule your vet recommends, then regular boosters. Until the series is complete, avoid places with lots of unfamiliar dogs.
If you have an adult dog and aren't sure their vaccines are up to date, just bring the vaccine booklet and we'll check it with you. Prevention is an investment in your dog's health that pays off in the long run.
## In Short
Cold-like symptoms don't always mean distemper. But if your dog is young, not fully vaccinated, or showing any of the signs above, an early check-up helps us care for them in time.
