## English version

# Puppy Vomiting and Lethargic? It Could Be Early Parvo — Diarrhea Often Shows Up a Day Later

When a puppy starts vomiting and acting lethargic, diarrhea often doesn't appear until a day later — so many families end up waiting an extra day. It's an easy mistake to make, because the early signs of **canine parvovirus (parvo)** look a lot like a simple upset stomach. Here's the order symptoms usually show up in, and the point at which your puppy should see a vet right away.

## The Real Order of Parvo Symptoms

Signs usually begin about 3–7 days after exposure, and they tend to follow this pattern:

- **First:** tired, less playful, not interested in food, sometimes a fever
- **Next:** vomiting, sometimes several times in one day
- **About 24–48 hours later:** diarrhea, sometimes with blood and a strong, unusual smell

Many people don't realize that by the time diarrhea is obvious, the puppy has often already lost a fair amount of fluid. The earlier signal to watch for is “lethargy + vomiting,” not diarrhea.

## Why “Let's Wait and See” Doesn't Suit Puppies

Puppies are small and have very little reserve of fluid and energy. Once they're vomiting and not eating, dehydration and low blood sugar can develop quickly, and things can become serious if care is delayed.

There's no drug that kills parvovirus directly. Treatment is supportive — fluids, anti-nausea medication, and protection against secondary infections. The earlier it starts, the better a puppy's chances of improving.

**Please bring your puppy in promptly** if they're under 6 months old or haven't finished their vaccines and are lethargic and vomiting — even without diarrhea. We have a rapid parvo test with quick results. Very early on, the test can come back negative, so the vet may repeat it and look at the whole picture.

## Vaccinated — So Why Can Puppies Still Catch It?

We're hearing this question a lot lately, and research from Africa has reported parvo in dogs that had been vaccinated. Common reasons include:

- **Maternal antibodies:** immunity from the mother's milk protects early on but also blocks vaccines, which is why puppies need a series of shots every 2–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age
- **Incomplete series:** one shot followed by a long gap may not build enough immunity
- **Vaccine storage:** vaccines must stay at the right temperature the whole way, or they can lose effectiveness
- **Virus variants:** researchers keep monitoring them, and standard vaccines remain the main, effective form of protection

This doesn't mean vaccines don't work — it means finishing the full schedule matters, and it's best to avoid busy dog areas until your vet says your puppy is well protected.

## What You Can Do on the Way to the Clinic

- Don't give human medicine, and don't force-feed
- Keep your puppy away from other puppies at home
- Note the times of vomiting and stools, or take photos for the vet
- Clean floors as your vet advises — parvo can survive in the environment for months
- Call ahead so our team can prepare an isolation area

## The Takeaway

If your puppy is lethargic and vomiting, don't wait for diarrhea. Coming in early gives the vet the best window to help. Not sure whether it's time to come in, or whether your puppy's vaccines are complete? Message us anytime — we're happy to help.
