## English version

# Our 15-Year-Old Cat Started Sleeping Behind the Cabinet — Sulking, or Telling Us Something?

A 15-year-old cat who slept on her owner's lap every night suddenly started hiding behind the cabinet alone. Her family assumed she was sulking.

They live near Khlong 5, Thanyaburi, and they waited almost two months before bringing her into our clinic in the Rangsit area. By then she had lost nearly a kilogram, her gums were pale, and she had a painful dental problem that made chewing miserable. A few weeks after treatment, she was back on the lap again.

We share this case not to make anyone feel guilty, but because "pulling away from the family" is one of the most commonly overlooked signs in older pets.

## Pets Don't Sulk for a Month

Animals don't hold grudges the way people do. A dog or cat may keep to themselves for a day or two after a scolding or a grooming session. But when a behaviour change sticks for more than a week, especially in a senior pet, it usually isn't mood. It's the body or the brain changing.

Hiding is an instinct that kicks in when an animal feels unsafe or is in pain. Cats in particular are experts at masking discomfort. Many keep eating and walking normally right up until the problem is advanced.

## Signs That Often Come With Hiding

Think back over the last week or two and see what else has crept in:

- Eating less, chewing slowly, or dropping food

- Noticeable weight loss, spine easier to feel

- Drinking or urinating more than usual, or going outside the litter box

- Coat looking rough, less self-grooming, mats over the back

- No longer jumping up to favourite spots, moving carefully on the back legs

- Night-time vocalising, pacing in circles, or standing and staring at a wall

That last one is what many families read as "just being stubborn in old age."

## Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome in Senior Pets

Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) is getting far more attention worldwide, simply because pets are living longer. It affects both senior dogs and senior cats. The stories we hear sound alike: wandering the house, getting lost in a room they've known for years, crying at 3 a.m. for no clear reason, toileting in odd places, and growing distant from people they once followed everywhere.

Important caveat: these signs don't automatically mean dementia. Kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, joint pain, and failing eyesight can all look very similar. A vet needs to rule those out first. And if it genuinely is cognitive decline, there are real ways to slow it down and keep your pet comfortable — diet, supplements, home layout, and a steady daily routine. Starting early makes a meaningful difference.

## What an Appointment Actually Involves

We usually start with a detailed history and a full physical exam: weight compared to the last visit, a look inside the mouth, palpating joints and abdomen. Blood work and a urine test typically follow, mainly to check kidney and thyroid function — the two most common findings in senior pets.

The single most helpful thing you can bring is a short phone video of the pacing or the night-time crying, plus a rough date for when things started changing.

## The Takeaway

If your pet is over 7 or 8 and has been keeping their distance for more than a week, please don't file it under "sulking" or "just old age." A check-up that finds nothing is good news. A check-up that finds something has found it three months earlier than you otherwise would have.

Not sure whether what you're seeing counts? Message us first on LINE @dogcorner or call 02-577-2561 / 064-969-9514. Tell us what's been happening and we'll help you decide when to come in.
