My Puppy Never Left the House. How Did They Get Parvo?
Your puppy has never set foot outside, yet they've been diagnosed with parvo. Where did it come from? It's one of the most common questions our vets hear, usually from families whose puppy came in vomiting, with diarrhea, tired and refusing food, and then tested positive for canine parvovirus. The short answer is that parvo doesn't only spread from dog to dog. It can also come in on ordinary things we use every day. Knowing how can help you protect a new puppy from day one.
What is parvo, and why are puppies most at risk?
Parvovirus attacks the lining of the intestines and the cells that make white blood cells. Puppies between about 6 weeks and 6 months old who haven't finished their vaccines are at the highest risk. Bring your puppy in promptly if you notice unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, repeated vomiting, or diarrhea that smells unusual or has blood in it. Parvo can become serious if it isn't treated quickly, but puppies have a much better chance when treatment starts early.
How does the virus get into your home?
Infected dogs shed huge amounts of virus in their stool, and parvo is extremely hardy. It can survive in soil, on concrete, and in shady, damp corners for many months, sometimes up to a year. That's why outbreaks keep coming back to the same areas, even after the sick dog has recovered or moved away.
Common routes include: - Shoe soles that have walked over soil or ground where other dogs have toileted - Car and motorbike tires driven into your yard or garage - Hands and clothes after touching or playing with other dogs - Items set down on the ground, like shopping bags and backpacks - Visitors who have dogs at home
Many people don't realize that a lot of regular floor cleaners don't kill parvovirus.
Vaccinated, but still infected?
More and more puppy owners are asking, “My puppy had the shots, so why did they still get it?” Research from several African countries found parvo kept spreading even among vaccinated dogs. The main reasons:
- Mom's antibodies get in the way. Antibodies from the mother's milk protect puppies early on, but they can also block the vaccine. They fade at different times in each puppy, which is why puppies need a series of shots every 2–4 weeks until they're at least 16 weeks old, on a schedule your vet sets. - Doses are mistimed or the series isn't finished, for example when the gap between shots is too long or the series stops partway. - Vaccine storage. Vaccines must stay properly chilled the whole way. If they don't, they work less well. - The virus changes. Parvo has several strains, and vets keep a close eye on them. Current vaccines still protect well when the full series is given on time.
The bottom line: vaccination is still your puppy's most important protection. It just needs the right timing and a complete series.
Block the virus until vaccines are complete
- Leave outdoor shoes at the door, or keep a separate pair for indoors - Wash your hands and change your top before picking up your puppy, especially after touching other dogs - Don't put your puppy down on unknown ground like public lawns or parking lots, and carry them or use a carrier when visiting the clinic - Skip playdates with dogs whose vaccine history you don't know - Clean entryway floors with a disinfectant that works against parvo, such as sodium hypochlorite bleach diluted the way your vet recommends. Clean off dirt first, then leave it on for about 10 minutes. Never use it on your puppy, and never mix it with other cleaners. - Keep every vaccine appointment and look after the vaccine booklet - If you've had a dog with parvo at home before, talk to your vet before bringing a new puppy home
This doesn't mean keeping your puppy shut in one room. Meeting family members and hearing new sounds in a clean space is still important for healthy development.
In summary
Parvo can reach your puppy even if they never go outside, because the virus rides in on shoes, tires, hands and everyday items. If something slipped through before, that happens to lots of families. Start today: stop the virus at your front door and keep your puppy's vaccines on schedule.
