# Your Dog Can Smell When You’re Sick, But Can’t Tell You When They Are: 4 Daily Habits Worth Writing Down
Dogs can smell illness in people, but they can’t tell us when they themselves feel unwell. The only way we’ll know is by watching the things they do every day, and noticing when they stop.
A study from overseas has been in the news lately. Researchers found that trained detection dogs could pick out Parkinson’s disease, the second most common neurological disease after Alzheimer’s, from the smell of people’s skin and sweat. Changes in the body may start years before a doctor can diagnose it, and some reports say up to 20 years. So it’s natural to wonder what our own pets notice about us. Our vets here in Rangsit, Khlong 5 and Thanyaburi would like to ask the opposite question too: how well do we notice when our pets aren’t feeling right?
## A Great Nose, Not Magic
Pets read us mainly through three things: our scent, our tone of voice, and our daily routine, like when we wake up, when we get home, or the sound of keys at the door. When any of these change, they notice right away.
We can use the same approach with them. We need to know what a normal day looks like for our pet, because they can’t tell us they’re in pain or feeling off. What they can show us is a change in behavior.
## 4 Baseline Behaviors to Write Down
While your pet is healthy, keep notes on your phone for one week. That becomes their normal.
1. **Eating**: how fast they finish, whether you need to call them, how much they eat per meal.
2. **Drinking**: how often you refill the bowl. Taking a quick photo of the water level morning and evening makes this easy to compare.
3. **Toileting**: how many times they pee and poop each day and what it looks like. For cats, count the clumps in the litter box.
4. **Sleep and energy**: where they sleep, whether they greet you, and when they like to play.
Once you have this record, you’ll spot changes much sooner.
## Watch for What They Stop Doing
The first sign of illness is often something your pet stops doing. They might not come to greet you at the door, stop jumping onto their usual spot on the sofa, or ignore a favorite treat. If it happens for one day and then they’re back to normal, it’s usually nothing to worry about. If it keeps going for several days, it’s time to bring them in for a check-up.
Some signs shouldn’t wait: a cat that hasn’t eaten anything for more than a day, a male cat going to the litter box often but not passing urine, unusually fast breathing at rest, or repeated vomiting. If you see any of these, bring your pet in as soon as you can.
## When Home Changes, Pets Feel It Too
Pets pick up on changes at home as quickly as they pick up on our moods. Moving house, a new family member, rearranged furniture, or a change in your work hours can all cause stress. You might see your pet eat less, hide, groom more, or have accidents. During times like these, try to keep meals and playtime at the same times as before, and set up a quiet spot where they can retreat. If they’re still not back to normal after one to two weeks, it’s worth a check-up to make sure there isn’t a medical problem as well.
## The Bottom Line
Your pet can’t tell you where it hurts. If you know what a normal day looks like for them, you’ll notice early when they start doing less or stop doing something. Write down these four behaviors, and if something changes and you’re not sure whether it needs a vet visit, message our team on LINE @dogcorner (https://lin.ee/DD6dpZ2), call 02-577-2561 or 064-969-9514, or visit DC pet Hospital & spa on Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road (Khlong 5, inbound side).
