A puppy that skips one meal might be fine. But a puppy that won't eat *and* won't play is not a wait-and-see situation.

## Upset stomach vs. parvo: what's the difference?

A puppy with a simple upset stomach usually stays bright and playful, still wags their tail and comes running to you. They might have loose stool once or twice, then bounce back.

With parvo, what often comes first is **lethargy: no interest in play or favorite toys**, plus a poor appetite. Within hours to a day, repeated vomiting, foul-smelling diarrhea, and sometimes bloody stool may follow. Puppies between roughly 6 weeks and 6 months old are at highest risk.

## What can wait, and what needs a vet now

**Usually okay to monitor (about 12–24 hours):**

- Eats less for one meal but is still playful

- Drinking water normally, no vomiting

- Normal stool, or slightly soft just once

**See a vet now, don't wait:**

- Won't eat *and* won't play, lying around all day

- Vomits more than once, or vomits after drinking

- Repeated diarrhea, or blood in the stool

- Pale or dry gums, feels unusually cold or hot

- Any of the above in a puppy who hasn't finished their vaccine series

## “But he's vaccinated. How can he still get it?”

We're getting this question a lot lately. Studies from several regions, including Africa, have reported parvo in dogs that had received vaccines. Reasons discussed include:

- **Maternal antibodies:** immunity passed from mom can block early vaccine doses, which is why puppies need a full series on schedule.

- **Timing gaps:** missed or delayed boosters leave windows of weak protection.

- **Vaccine storage:** vaccines not kept at proper temperatures may not work as well.

- **Virus changes:** new strains are still being studied.

Vaccination is still the most important protection. But “vaccinated” doesn't automatically rule parvo out. If your puppy shows signs, let a vet check.

## The golden window: why “one more night” is risky

Parvo drains fluids and electrolytes fast, and small puppies have very little reserve. They can go downhill quickly. The sooner a puppy is tested and started on fluids and supportive care, the better their chances. We can run a rapid parvo test at the clinic.
