# Your Rescued Kitten's First Vet Visit: What Gets Checked, From Ears to Tail
What does a vet actually check when you bring in a stray kitten for the first time? Short answer: everything, from the ears to the bottom. Plenty of families around Rangsit, Khlong 5, Thanyaburi and Pathum Thani take in a tiny stray and then wonder: can this little one sleep in our bed tonight, or should we get a kitten health check first?
A recent news report from Kushtia, Bangladesh, said more people there need rabies shots after cat bites or scratches, partly because pet cats often never get vaccinated. Rabies still exists in Thailand, and cats can catch it just like dogs. This isn't meant to make you afraid of rescued kittens. It's a reminder that the first vet visit protects your kitten and your family.
## 1. Ears to Tail: The Physical Exam
The vet starts by weighing your kitten, taking their temperature, and checking their teeth to estimate age. Then they go over the body part by part:
- **Ears:** dark brown, coffee-ground-like wax often means ear mites, which are very common in strays.
- **Eyes and nose:** discharge, red eyes, sneezing or a runny nose can be signs of cat flu.
- **Mouth and gums:** gums should be pink. Very pale gums can point to heavy flea burden or other problems.
- **Skin and coat:** checking for fleas, ticks, and round patches of hair loss that may be ringworm.
- **Heart, lungs, belly:** listening to the heart and lungs, and feeling the belly for swelling or lumps.
- **Bottom and genitals:** confirming sex, checking for a dirty or swollen bottom, and looking for an umbilical hernia.
## 2. Stool Test and Deworming
Most stray kittens have worms, even chubby ones. If you can, bring a fresh stool sample in a bag. The vet will look for worm eggs and diarrhea-causing parasites, then choose a dewormer dosed for your kitten's weight. Many kittens need a follow-up dose, because one round may not clear everything.
## 3. Blood Test and Vaccine Plan
Your vet may recommend testing for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), especially if you already have cats at home. Very young kittens sometimes need a retest later to confirm the result.
The vet will also set up a vaccine schedule, including the core cat vaccine and rabies, based on your kitten's age and health that day. If the kitten is unwell, treatment may come first and the shots after.
If an unvaccinated kitten bites or scratches someone hard enough to break the skin, wash the wound well with soap and running water, then see a doctor. Don't just wait and watch.
## 4. Before Sharing Your Bed
Cats can pass a few things to people: ringworm, fleas, some worms, and infections from scratches. The good news is that almost all of it is preventable.
- Keep your kitten in a separate room at first, until the vet confirms clear skin, deworming, and flea treatment.
- Wash your hands after every litter box clean-up.
- If someone is pregnant, have another person handle the litter box.
- Tell your vet if there are young children, elderly family members, or anyone with a weak immune system at home, so the advice fits your household.
