# My Cat Never Goes Outside. Does She Really Need a Rabies Vaccine?
Many cat owners living in condos around Rangsit believe, 'My cat never leaves the room, so she doesn't need a rabies shot.' That belief is only half right. Here's the other half.
We hear this question all the time at our clinic in Rangsit, Khlong 5 and Thanyaburi, especially from first-time cat parents. So let's talk honestly about whether an indoor cat still needs a rabies vaccine.
## The half that's right: indoor cats are at lower risk
You're not wrong. Rabies spreads through the saliva of an infected animal, usually by a bite or scratch. A cat who stays indoors and never meets unfamiliar animals has far less exposure than one who roams outside.
But lower risk isn't the same as no risk. Once rabies symptoms appear, in pets or in people, there is almost no effective treatment. That's why prevention matters so much.
## The missing half: how indoor cats can still be exposed
In Thailand, cats are the second most common animal found to carry rabies, after dogs. And real condo life has more gaps than we like to think:
- Your cat slips out the door while you're collecting a delivery or taking out the trash
- She climbs off the balcony and meets a stray outside
- You move house, leave her with a sitter, or take her somewhere temporarily
- A new pet joins the family before its vaccine history is known
It only takes one unseen bite to leave you worrying for weeks.
## If your cat bites or scratches someone, vaccine records really help
Recent news from Kushtia, Bangladesh, describes pet cats becoming a new public health concern. More people are getting rabies shots after cat bites or scratches, partly because many owners never vaccinated their cats.
The same can happen at home. A startled cat might scratch a child or a guest. That person should still see a doctor, but an up-to-date vaccine record makes the risk easier to assess and gives everyone peace of mind.
## How often should cats be vaccinated?
Kittens can usually get their first rabies shot at around 3 months old, followed by a booster as scheduled, and then a yearly shot, or as your vet recommends based on the vaccine type and your cat's health.
Adopted an adult cat and not sure about her history? No problem. Bring her in, and we'll check her records, examine her, and plan the right vaccine schedule for her.
## The bottom line
Indoor cats really are at lower risk, but not zero. A yearly rabies vaccine closes the small gaps you might not expect, protecting both your cat and your family.
