## English version

# When Your Dog Stops Eating, Check the Nose and Mouth Before Blaming the Food

A dog who suddenly ignores the strong-smelling food they used to love is often labelled a picky eater. In our clinic, the problem is usually in the nose or the mouth — not in the bowl.

Most owners around Rangsit, Khlong 5 and Thanyaburi who bring us a dog that "won't eat" have already tried two or three brands, warmed the food up, and mixed in a favourite topper. None of it works, because what changed isn't appetite. It's the ability to smell and to chew.

### A dog's nose isn't magic — it's a medical instrument

There's a line of research getting a lot of attention right now: trained dogs sniffing human skin and sweat can flag signs of Parkinson's disease — the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's — before doctors can diagnose it, with some reports describing a lead time of many years, up to around two decades.

This work is still at the research stage and doesn't replace medical testing. But it makes one thing clear: a dog's nose is far more sensitive than we assume. And when an organ that sensitive stops working properly, your dog notices long before you do. For dogs, eating starts at the nose, not the tongue. No smell, no meal.

### A blocked nose makes dinner meaningless

Watch how your dog approaches the bowl. Do they sniff as long as usual, or take one sniff and walk away? Look for frequent sneezing, thick discharge (especially from one nostril only), noisy breathing, pawing at the face, or a dry, crusted nose.

Common causes range from upper respiratory infection and allergies to a foreign body such as a grass seed picked up on a walk, and in older dogs, nasal tumours. The giveaway: these dogs still *want* to eat. They come to the bowl wagging, sniff, hesitate, and leave.

### If the nose is clear but they still won't eat, look inside the mouth

This is the group owners misread most often. The dog runs to the bowl excited, picks up a kibble — and drops it. Chews on one side only. Eats wet food happily but refuses dry. That isn't fussiness. That's pain.

We commonly find tartar build-up with inflamed gums, loose teeth, tooth root abscesses, fractured teeth from chewing hard objects, mouth ulcers, or a bone or stick wedged across the roof of the mouth. At home, watch for unusually bad breath, increased drooling, blood in the saliva or on toys, and one-sided facial swelling under the eye.

### Telling the three apart

- **Genuinely bored** — sniffs normally, still takes treats, bright and active, stable weight; usually with a reason like hot weather, a recent food change, or too many snacks.

- **Can't smell** — interested, but rejects food after sniffing; sneezing, discharge or noisy breathing alongside.

- **Mouth pain** — very keen to eat, but drops food after chewing, prefers soft food, bad breath, drooling.

Come in if a dog hasn't eaten for more than 24 hours (for cats it's more urgent — going over 24 hours without food risks hepatic lipidosis), or if there's weight loss, lethargy, vomiting, bleeding or laboured breathing.

### The short version

"Not eating" is a sign, not a diagnosis. Cycling through new foods can cost you weeks; checking the mouth and nose takes a few minutes.

If your pet has been turning away from the bowl for a day or two, message us and tell us what you're seeing — age, breed, and how the eating has changed. A short video of them approaching the bowl helps us a lot. The veterinary team at DC pet Hospital & spa, Khlong 5, Rangsit, is open every day 08:00–22:00.
