# Catching It Early: Why Your Pet's Bloodwork Changes Years Before They Look Sick
The news story making the rounds says disease starts sending signals long before symptoms show — and it works the same way in dogs and cats. Several blood values start drifting a year or more before your pet ever looks unwell. At our clinic near Rangsit–Khlong 5, we see it constantly: someone brings their pet in for a routine annual check, the dog is eating well and running around like normal, and the bloodwork quietly says something has already begun.
## What the dog-nose study actually tells us
Researchers overseas found that trained scent-detection dogs could pick up signs of Parkinson's disease — the second most common neurological disorder after Alzheimer's — from the smell of human skin and sweat, up to 20 years before doctors could diagnose it.
The interesting part isn't only how good a dog's nose is. It's the underlying point: the body changes before symptoms appear. And that applies directly to our own pets, because dogs and cats don't tell us they're tired or hurting. They're remarkably good at hiding discomfort. So the tool we rely on isn't waiting and watching — it's drawing blood and reading numbers.
## What an annual blood panel actually looks at
- **Complete blood count (CBC)** — anaemia, infection, inflammation, and platelets, which matters a lot in homes dealing with ticks and fleas.
- **Kidney values (BUN, creatinine, SDMA)** — kidneys lose a lot of function before they complain. By the time a cat is drinking more, urinating more, and losing weight, the easy window has usually passed.
- **Liver values (ALT, ALP) and blood glucose** — helpful for catching early diabetes and liver problems.
- **Urine and faecal testing** — urine concentration, protein loss, crystals, and intestinal parasites.
- **Tick-borne disease and heartworm screening in dogs** — Thanyaburi and Pathum Thani stay humid with mosquitoes year-round, so it's worth checking.
- **Thyroid and blood pressure in senior cats** — hyperthyroid cats often look like they're eating well while slowly losing weight, which owners read as normal.
That first set of results has a second job: it becomes your pet's personal baseline. Next year we're not only asking whether a value is outside the reference range, but how far it has moved from where that individual started.
## When should you start?
- **Around 1 year old** — run the first panel alongside annual vaccines to establish a baseline.
- **Adult years** — once a year, bundled with vaccines so it's one visit.
- **Large-breed dogs from 5–6 years, small breeds and cats from 7 years** — move to twice a year. One of their years equals several of ours, and disease moves faster than you'd expect.
- **Pets with a diagnosed condition or on long-term medication** — follow the schedule your vet sets; don't wait for the annual mark.
## Small signs worth noting at home
Nothing here is cause for panic, but all of it is worth writing down and telling your vet: gradual weight loss or gain with no clear reason, a change in how much water they drink, more frequent trips to the litter box, stronger breath odour, sleeping more, or playing less in the way we brush off as "they're just getting older." That last one hides illness more often than any of the others.
## The takeaway
An annual check isn't about hunting for disease. It's about knowing early, while there are still plenty of options — adjusting diet, adjusting medication, managing things for years. It's also far kinder on the wallet than treating a pet who has already crashed.
Not sure what your pet needs, or whether they're old enough to start? Message us. Tell us the breed, the age, and anything you've noticed, and we'll help you work out which panel makes sense.
