# Your Pet Is Over 5 and Has Never Had a Blood Test? What You 'Save' Today Could Cost You Far More Later
If your dog or cat is over five and has never had a blood test, the money you 'save' this year often comes back as a vet bill that costs several times more.
We're not saying this to scare anyone. It's something we see all the time at our clinic in Rangsit, Khlong 5. Vets in other countries have been saying the same thing lately: most of the really shocking vet bills could have been prevented if owners had covered a few basics early. One of the most basic is a yearly wellness check with bloodwork, and that goes for dogs and cats here in Thanyaburi and Pathum Thani too.
## Most big vet bills don't start with a serious disease
Think about the bill for a pet who arrives already very sick. It usually reads something like this: several nights in hospital, IV fluids, repeat blood tests to track progress, an ultrasound, injections, a prescription diet, and a series of follow-up visits.
What stands out is that many of these cases didn't start with anything dramatic. They started small, with kidney values creeping up or liver numbers slightly off. Caught early, those can often be managed with a diet change, medication and regular check-ins. Most of that bill isn't paying for the disease. It's paying for the time that went by before anyone noticed.
## What a blood test sees that we can't
Pets are very good at hiding when they feel unwell, and cats are experts at it. On the outside they may be eating, sleeping and acting normal, but bloodwork can tell us about kidney and liver function, blood sugar, anemia and signs of inflammation.
Take kidney disease. By the time a pet shows clear signs like drinking more, peeing more or losing weight, a lot of kidney function has usually been lost already. Testing while your pet still seems healthy is like switching on the light before you walk into the furniture. It also gives you a baseline, so next year we can compare and spot what's starting to change.
## Why five is a good place to start
Around age five, most dogs and cats are entering middle age, and large-breed dogs age faster than small ones. Most pets are still in good shape at this point, which makes it the ideal time to record what normal looks like for them. A check-up once a year is the general recommendation. As your pet gets older, or if they have an ongoing condition, your vet may suggest testing more often depending on the individual animal.
## What you can do at home
No equipment needed. Just watch and write things down:
- Is your pet drinking or peeing more, or less, than usual?
- Has their weight or shape changed? Try feeling for their ribs.
- Appetite, bad breath, gum color
- Energy levels: can they still manage the stairs or jump onto the sofa like before?
Those small notes help your vet read the blood results much more accurately. And keep up with vaccines, flea, tick and worm prevention, and dental care. Prevention is always cheaper than treatment.
## In short
A yearly wellness check isn't an unnecessary expense. It's how small problems get caught before they turn into big ones, for your pet's health and for your wallet.
