## English version

# Dish Soap and Vinegar for Fleas: The Fleas Survive, Your Pet's Skin Doesn't

Many households still pour laundry detergent or vinegar on their pets to get rid of fleas. The fleas survive, and the skin ends up paying the price.

In the rainy season, warm and humid weather lets fleas lay eggs and multiply quickly. Lots of owners see their dog or cat scratching all day, give them a bath, and find the itching is back a few days later. Reaching for something from the kitchen is an easy mistake to make, because we all want our pets to feel better fast. Here's what to avoid and what actually works.

### Why detergent and vinegar don't work

Detergent is made for clothes. It's alkaline and contains strong cleaning agents. Dog and cat skin is thinner than ours and has a different pH, so repeated washing strips away the natural oils that protect it. The skin gets dry, red and flaky, and itchier than before. Some pets scratch until they have open sores that get infected. Pets also lick their fur and can swallow the residue, and cats groom themselves constantly.

There's no good evidence that vinegar kills or repels fleas, and its acidity can sting skin that's already scratched raw.

It can look like it worked because some fleas wash off in the bath. The eggs and larvae in your home are still there, though, and the fleas come back within days.

### What many owners don't realize: most fleas live in your home, not on your pet

The adult fleas you see on your pet make up only about 5% of the total. The rest are eggs, larvae and pupae hiding in carpets, bedding, sofa cushions and floor cracks. Pupae can wait for weeks or even months, then hatch when it's warm and humid or when an animal walks by. That's why fleas keep coming back no matter how often you bathe your pet.

### Other home remedies to watch out for

- **Essential oils** such as tea tree oil can be toxic to cats, even in small amounts.
- **Never use dog flea products on cats.** Some contain permethrin, which can cause tremors or seizures in cats and can become serious if not treated quickly.
- **Household insect sprays** should never be sprayed directly on your pet.

If your pet drools heavily, trembles or walks unsteadily after exposure to any of these, bring them in to be seen as soon as possible.

### What actually works

1. **Use a vet-recommended flea product.** Options include spot-ons, oral chews and collars, matched to your pet's species, age and weight.
2. **Treat every pet in the house at the same time,** even if you've only spotted fleas on one.
3. **Treat your home too.** Vacuum carpets, sofas and corners regularly, throw the bag out right away, and wash pet bedding in hot water.
4. **Keep going for the full cycle.** Treat for at least 2–3 months to break the flea life cycle, then keep up prevention through the rainy season.
5. **If the skin is already red, flaky or sore, have it checked first.** Some pets have flea allergy dermatitis or a secondary infection that needs treating at the same time.

Preventing fleas properly from the start keeps your pet comfortable and saves you money in the long run.

### The bottom line

Detergent, vinegar and essential oils can look like shortcuts, but they don't break the flea cycle and they can hurt your pet's skin. The good news is that fleas are very manageable. With the right care started early, most pets improve a lot.
