## English version

# “They’re Just Getting Old” — Or Is It? Understanding Cognitive Dysfunction (CDS) in Senior Dogs and Cats

“They’re just old. That’s how it goes — let it be.” That one sentence leads many loving owners to miss the window when we can help the most.

When a dog or cat who has shared your home for over a decade starts pacing around the house, crying in the middle of the night, or peeing in the wrong place, it’s natural to think they’re simply old, stubborn, or sulking. But these changes can be signs of Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) — a form of age-related brain decline that a vet can assess, and that we can often slow down so your pet lives more comfortably.

Pets are living longer than ever, which is why CDS is getting more attention worldwide. Here’s how to tell when it might be more than “just age.”

## Signs It May Be More Than “Old and Stubborn”

- Getting lost at home, staring at walls or corners, getting stuck behind doors or furniture

- Sleeping more during the day but pacing or vocalizing at night

- Toilet accidents in a pet who was always reliably house-trained

- Greeting family less — or the opposite, becoming clingy and restless

- Forgetting familiar cues or routines, losing interest in toys

If you notice one or two of these, especially if they’re slowly progressing, jot down when and how often they happen and share it with your vet.

## Why a Check-Up Matters (Don’t Guess It’s Dementia)

Symptoms that look like CDS can come from other treatable conditions: joint pain that makes the trip to the toilet spot too hard, kidney disease, diabetes, or urinary problems that cause frequent urination, and declining sight or hearing. In senior cats, night-time yowling can also be linked to an overactive thyroid or high blood pressure.

Your vet will take a history, do a physical exam, and may run blood and urine tests or check blood pressure to rule these out first. Regular senior wellness checks are worth it — catching things early makes care easier and saves more in the long run.

## It Can Be Slowed — and Your Pet Can Feel Better

There’s no cure for CDS yet, but starting care early gives a good chance of slowing it down and making your pet noticeably happier.

- **Keep a steady routine** for meals, walks, and bedtime

- **Gentle brain games** like treat puzzles, short easy training sessions, and new sniffing routes on walks

- **A home that feels safe** with a soft night light, litter boxes or pee pads placed closer, and furniture kept where it is

- **Age-appropriate nutrition** such as senior diets with antioxidants or omega-3s, chosen with your vet’s guidance

- **Medication when suitable** — some pets may benefit from medicines that support brain function or sleep, depending on their overall health. Please never give human medicine to your pet.

## The Bottom Line

Some change is a natural part of growing older, but not everything needs to be “let go.” Many families simply haven’t noticed the signs yet — that’s completely understandable. Starting today can still make a real difference.
