# Bathing More Often to Fight Fungus? If the Skin Underneath Never Dries, You're Building a Steam Room on Your Pet Every Week

You're bathing more often because you're worried about ringworm and fungal infections. But if the dryer never reaches the skin underneath, you're building a warm, damp steam room on your pet every single week.

As the rainy season winds down around Rangsit, Khlong 5 and Thanyaburi, the air stays humid and the heat comes and goes. Skin cases haven't slowed down at all — fungal infections, yeast, mange, and inflamed skin from constant licking. The pattern we see most often isn't careless owners. It's the opposite: people who care a lot, who went from bathing once a month to once a week, and whose pets got worse anyway. Not because they bathed wrong, but because the coat dried and the skin didn't.

## More Baths Doesn't Automatically Mean Cleaner

Fungus and yeast on the skin all want the same thing: warm, damp, and poorly ventilated. If the skin under the coat stays slightly damp for hours after a bath, you've handed them exactly that once a week.

Bathing too often with the wrong shampoo also strips the natural oils that protect the skin. Dry skin gets itchy, your pet scratches and licks more, and those small raw spots become an easy entry point for infection.

The "right" bathing frequency depends on the diagnosis and the medicated shampoo being used. Some cases need two baths a week, others need fewer. There's no single schedule that fits every household.

## Five Spots That Almost Never Get Fully Dry

1. **The neck folds and under the chin** — especially on pets that wear a collar around the clock.

2. **Armpits and groin** — thin skin, thin coat, but tucked into folds the dryer barely reaches.

3. **The belly and around the mammary area** — most pets stand while being dried, so we only blow the top.

4. **Between the toes and around the nails** — the dampest spot on the body, and the one they lick most.

5. **Tail base, rear end, and inside the ears** — drop-eared breeds like Beagles and Cockers, and double-coated dogs like Pomeranians and Huskies, hold water in the undercoat for a very long time.

## How to Actually Dry Down to the Skin

- **Towel first.** Use two or three towels and press, don't rub. It cuts your drying time nearly in half.

- **Part the coat in sections.** Use your fingers or a comb to open the fur until you can see skin, then aim the air right into that parting. Work section by section. Blowing over the whole body at once dries the top layer while the skin stays wet.

- **Warm, not hot.** Test the air on the back of your own hand first, keep the nozzle 20–30 cm away, and keep it moving.

- **Check with the back of your hand.** Touch the skin under the coat — it shouldn't feel cool or tacky. Cool means still wet.

- **Go gentle between the toes,** then finish with cotton or a clean cloth.

- **Cats who panic at the dryer** don't need to be forced. Use plenty of towels in a well-ventilated room, and don't leave a damp cat sitting in air conditioning.

- **After drying,** keep them off wet floors and damp grass for a while.

## When Not to Wait

A sour smell, circular hair loss, red patches, pustules or crusting, repeated licking or chewing at one spot, or dark brown ear discharge with a strong odor — all of these deserve a vet's eyes before they spread.

And if you're stuck in a "it cleared up, then came back" loop, the most common reason is stopping medication as soon as things look better, while the organism is still there and the humidity at home is still high. Those cases need both the pet and the home environment looked at together.

## The Short Version

Bathing isn't the problem. Trapped moisture under the coat is. Remember it this way: a dry coat isn't enough — the skin has to be dry too.

If you're not sure your drying routine is doing the job, or your pet keeps relapsing, message us first. Send a photo of the skin via Messenger or LINE @dogcorner, or bring them in for a skin check any day between 08:00 and 22:00.
