# "My Senior Dog Coughs Because He's Just Old" — The Assumption That Costs 10-Year-Olds Precious Time

"An old dog coughing is just a cold." That belief is why a lot of 10-year-old dogs walk through our clinic door later than they should have.

The topic came back around recently after FM91's pet clinic programme (6 Sep 2026) continued its interview with Dr. Chissanu Tiyacharoensri in EP.2, covering kidney and heart disease in senior pets. The part owners kept repeating: early-stage disease shows almost nothing, and people read it as "he's just getting old."

A cough doesn't automatically mean heart disease. But it doesn't automatically mean a cold either. Here's how three common coughs differ.

## Airway cough: dry, in bursts

This one comes in clusters — dry, sometimes ending with a retching gag. There's usually a story behind it: a recent groom, a boarding stay, a meet-up with other dogs. Some pups also have nasal discharge, watery eyes, or seem a bit flat.

What to notice: it happens any time of day, and there's usually a clear trigger event beforehand.

## Heart cough: the one you meet alone at 2 a.m.

This is the cough owners discover by themselves in the middle of the night. Small senior breeds — Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Poodle — are the group where age-related valve disease shows up most often.

What makes it different is the **timing** and the **posture**. It tends to come when your pet is lying flat, from late night into early morning. They may need to sit up, stretch the neck out, and work harder to breathe. Many tire faster than they used to, ask for shorter walks, or have had a brief wobbly moment.

If that pattern sounds familiar, don't panic — but do let a vet listen to the heart. A murmur is usually audible well before the symptoms become obvious.

## Small-breed throat cough: the goose honk

Many small dogs develop a flatter-than-normal windpipe as they age, and the sound is distinctive — dry, loud, short, very much like a goose honk.

What to notice: it shows up during excitement, pulling against a neck collar, drinking too fast, or on hot days. Once they settle, it stops — the opposite of a heart cough, which tends to arrive at rest.

## What you can track at home: sleeping breath count

No equipment needed. Wait until your dog is properly asleep, then count chest movements (up-and-down counts as one) for a full minute. Note it down for three or four days.

If the number creeps up, or sits clearly above your own pet's normal, that's genuinely useful information for your vet. A video of the cough helps too — pets are famously reluctant to demonstrate it in the exam room.

## The takeaway

A cough in a senior pet isn't always serious, and it isn't always nothing. What helps most is noticing *when* it happens and *what follows*.
